‘DARK SOCIAL’ POLL SHOWS BRITISH YOUTH FAVOURS TRUMP, HAS MAJOR CONCERNS OVER SYRIA, WANTS NEW-STYLE POLITICS
If the US presidential election were held among young British voters, Republican Party candidate Donald Trump would be the clear favourite, according to a survey conducted this weekend by London-based Dark Social Marketing agency Frictionless.Social.
Citing disillusionment with what they perceived as the ‘old-style’ politics of Hillary Clinton as well as a lack of faith in her attitude towards Syria, responses veered from outright disenchantment (‘Hillary will destroy America’), to scepticism that either candidate would be a worthy winner (‘Trump Is the lesser of two evils’, ‘I know who won’t win – the American people’).
Speaking on behalf of Frictionless.Social, who carried out the survey on the YikYak platform, co-founder Paul Hurley said ‘Once again, young British respondents are using Dark Social platforms such as YikYak and WhatsApp to say what they really mean about world politics. We saw this earlier in the year with Brexit with a huge level of interest in our surveys amongst young people. This is a politically engaged, vociferous section of society.’
Co-founder Jon Salmon said ‘Could this be the first Presidential election that was won on Dark social? Even after the failure to predict the Brexit result, traditional media and pollsters are still ignoring the open and honest conversations happening on Dark social platforms like WhatsApp, WeChat and YikYak.’
